Jaren geleden schreef je een artikel, of een essay, ‘The  Responsability of Intellectuals’ (1967) (De Verantwoordelijkheid van Intellectuelen). Wat is een intellectueel eigenlijk?

Noam Chomsky: "Het is een term die ik niet veel gebruik, maar de term wordt wel veel gebruikt. Hij verwijst naar personen die voldoende privilege en gelegenheid hebben om te kunnen spreken over zaken van belang en bezorgdheid, die dat doen met een zekere mate van prestige en autoriteit, die terecht of niet terecht kunnen zijn. Zij worden dus intellectuelen genoemd. Een fysicus die in een lab werkt, wordt geen intellectueel genoemd, maar als hij een lezing geeft over pakweg de verspreiding van kernwapens, dan is hij een intellectueel."

At a covert forward operating base run by the US Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, members of an elite division of Blackwater are at the center of a secret program in which they plan targeted assassinations of suspected Taliban and Al Qaeda operatives, "snatch and grabs" of high-value targets and other sensitive action inside and outside Pakistan, an investigation by The Nation has found. The Blackwater operatives also assist in gathering intelligence and help run a secret US military drone bombing campaign that runs parallel to the well-documented CIA predator strikes, according to a well-placed source within the US military intelligence apparatus.

The report found that politically motivated cyberattacks have increased and five countries – the United States, Russia, France, Israel and China – are now armed with cyberweapons.

Bush is a terrorist' T-shirt sparks legal row.

A MAN has threatened legal action against Qantas for barring him from an international flight because he was wearing a T-shirt depicting US President George W. Bush as a terrorist.

Allen Jasson said today he was defending freedom of speech through his insistence on wearing the T-shirt.

Mr Jasson, 55, an Australian IT specialist who lives in London, is staying with his daughter in Melbourne after he was refused entry to the flight to London at Melbourne Airport on Friday.

Airline staff argued that the T-shirt, which bears an image of the US president with the slogan 'World's number 1 terrorist', was a security risk or an item likely to upset passengers.

Het afgelopen jaar eindigde, wat oorlog en vrede betreft, in mineur. Met het begin van het nieuwe jaar is meteen alle hoop op verbetering de grond in gebombardeerd.
Pessimisme is wat rest. Een democratisch gekozen regering in de Palestijnse Gebieden wordt geboycot door de VS en andere Westerse landen. Sterker, de verslagen Fatah-partij wordt met behulp van een sterk uitgebreide presidentiële garde bewapend en getraind door de VS om Hamas militair te verslaan.
Hezbollah, de Libanese Shiitische partij, wordt in de VS benoemd als grootste aankomende bedreiging, na Iran. In Libanon worden binnenlandse veiligheidstroepen (ISF) snel uitgebreid en bewapend door enkele Golfstaten met toestemming van de VS. Ook spreken de laatste berichten van het leveren van Humvees door de VS aan Libanon.

Campagne tegen Wapenhandel

De wapenexport vanuit Nederland maakt de afgelopen jaren een opmerkelijke groei door. In 2005 behoorde Nederland tot de vijf belangrijkste landen op dat gebied. De waarde van de verstrekte wapenexportvergunningen bedroeg in 2005 1,2 miljard euro; niet eerder was dat zo hoog. Al enkele jaren is een langzaam stijgende trend te zien. Nieuwe grote orders uit ondermeer Chili en Indonesië doen vermoeden dat die tendens in 2006 doorzet. Hoewel Nederland zegt terughoudend te zijn met wapen-exporten wijst de praktijk ondubbelzinnig het tegendeel uit. Conflictgebieden en autoritaire regimes hebben onverminderd toegang tot militair materieel uit Nederland. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn India, Taiwan, Turkije en Egypte.
