TOWNS MOVEMENT AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR SOCIAL CHANGE.
There’s been a lot of talk about Transition Towns (TT) lately. In a nutshell, the TT approach offers a permaculture-influenced model for a transition to a low carbon society. The original idea grew out of a full time permaculture degree in Kinsale, Ireland where in 2005 Rob Hopkins and his students developed a town wide Energy Descent Plan for a ten-year period.

De groei in de verkoop van water uit flessen neemt astronomische proporties aan. Het Pacific Institute heeft over 2006 de volgende berekeningen gemaakt ten aanzien van de hoeveelheid energie die nodig is om aan deze vraag te voldoen.

• Het produceren van plastic flessen voor de amerikaanse consument staat gelijk aan 17 miljoen vaten olie, waar de kosten voor energie ten aanzien van transport niet zijn meegenomen.
• Er komt ruim 2.5 miljoen CO2 vrij bij de productie van deze plastic flessen
• Het kost 3 liter water om 1 liter flessen water te produceren

Zolang we niet stoppen met het bouwen van nieuwe steenkool-, olie- en gascentrales heeft het ontwikkelen van energie-efficiënte technologie en het plaatsen van zonnecentrales en windmolens weinig zin. Veel belangrijker dan wat we wel doen, is wat we niet doen.

Het aandeel van hernieuwbare energie in de totale elektriciteitsproductie stijgt. Maar dat zet weinig zoden aan de dijk zolang ook de totale elektriciteitsproductie blijft stijgen. We stoken nog altijd ieder jaar meer fossiele brandstoffen op. Hernieuwbare energiebronnen vervangen
geen steenkool-, olie- of gascentrales, ze vangen slechts (gedeeltelijk) het steeds groeiende energieverbruik op. De oplossing is eenvoudig: stel een absolute limiet aan de totale energieproductie.
Waarom zouden we het in 2030 niet kunnen stellen met de hoeveelheid energie die we vandaag verbruiken?

Key oil figures were distorted by US pressure, says whistleblower. Watchdog's estimates of reserves inflated says top official

The world is much closer to running out of oil than official estimates admit, according to a whistleblower at the International Energy Agency who claims it has been deliberately underplaying a looming shortage for fear of triggering panic buying.

The senior official claims the US has played an influential role in encouraging the watchdog to underplay the rate of decline from existing oil fields while overplaying the chances of finding new reserves.

Buckle your seatbelt, you may be going nowhere -- and it could be a very bumpy ride. Oil futures have just passed $71 for a barrel of "light, sweet crude oil" (sweet for energy stocks, anyway) on its way to... well, we don't know exactly where, but it won't feel good, not at the pump and not in the economy either. Dit is het boek over peakoil en de klimaatcrisis waar ik echt enthousiast over werd. En vooral omdat het over oplossingen gaat, en laat zien hoe je die zelf organiseert. De schrijver, Rob Hopkins startte in 2006 in het klein plaatsje (8.000 inwoners) Tottness in Engeland een beweging die zich sindsdien als een olievlek verspreidt.
