Most political arguments don’t really have a right and a wrong, no matter how passionately they’re argued. They’re about human preferences -- for more health care or lower taxes, for a war to secure some particular end or a peace that leaves some danger intact.  On occasion, there are clear-cut moral issues: the rights of minorities or women to a full share in public life, say; but usually even those of us most passionate about human affairs recognize that we’re on one side of a debate, that there are legitimate arguments to the contrary (endless deficits, coat-hanger abortions, a resurgent al-Qaeda). We need people taking strong positions to move issues forward, which is why I’m always ready to carry a placard or sign a petition, but most of us also realize that, sooner or later, we have to come to some sort of compromise.

Met nog minder dan zes weken te gaan vooraleer de ‘beslissende’ VN-klimaattop in Kopenhagen van start gaat, verdwijnt langzaamaan de hoop dat de wereld erin zal slagen een krachtdadig internationaal klimaatakkoord tot stand te brengen. Zo’n nieuw akkoord dient als opvolger voor het Kyoto-Akkoord dat in 2012 afloopt. Een succesvol akkoord vereist dat er op zijn minst op vier vlakken doorbraken worden geforceerd: verregaande emissiereductiedoelstellingen (mitigatie), adaptatiemaatregelen, technologieoverdracht en de financiering van dit alles.

Average temperatures across the world are on course to rise by up to 6C without urgent action to curb CO2 emissions, according a new analysis.

Emissions rose by 29% between 2000 and 2008, says the Global Carbon Project.

All of that growth came in developing countries, but a quarter of it came through production of goods for consumption in industrialised nations.

The other day I received a pre-publication copy of The Battle of the Story of the Battle of Seattle, by David and Rebecca Solnit. It's set to come out 10 years after a historic coalition of activists shut down the World Trade Organisation summit in Seattle – the spark that ignited a global anti-corporate movement.

The book is a fascinating account of what really happened in Seattle; but when I spoke to David Solnit, the direct-action guru who helped engineer the shutdown, I found him less interested in reminiscing about 1999 than in talking about the upcoming United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen and the "climate justice" actions he is helping to organise across the United States on 30 November.

We kunnen op 24 oktober met Bill McKibben meedoen aan de landelijke protesten tegen de stijgende uitstoot van kooldioxide. We kunnen onze consumptie van fossiele brandstoffen omlaag brengen. We kunnen minder water gebruiken. We kunnen plastic tassen in de ban doen. We kunnen spaarlampen indraaien. We kunnen een composthoop aanleggen in onze achtertuin. Maar als we de corporatistische staat niet afbreken zullen al deze acties net zo weinig waarde hebben als de Ghost Dance shirts die de inheemse Amerikaanse krijgers aantrokken om zichzelf te beschermen tegen de kogels van de witte soldaten bij Wounded Knee.

Zaterdag 5 september nam ik deel aan een demonstratie tegen kernenergie in Berlijn. Het protest was het hoogtepunt van een landelijke actieweek in Duitsland tegen het voornemen van het CDU en de FDP de geplande afbouw of geleidelijke stopzetting van kernenergie (?ausstieg?) ongedaan te maken. Dat plan is actueel in verband met de landelijke verkiezingen in Duitsland later deze maand. De christenconservatieven willen gaan regeren met de liberalen en als ze samen een meerderheid halen, zal kernenergie in Duitsland ook in de komende decennia mogelijk blijven.

Dit is het boek over peakoil en de klimaatcrisis waar ik echt enthousiast over werd. En vooral omdat het over oplossingen gaat, en laat zien hoe je die zelf organiseert. De schrijver, Rob Hopkins startte in 2006 in het klein plaatsje (8.000 inwoners) Tottness in Engeland een beweging die zich sindsdien als een olievlek verspreidt.
