De manier waarop we leven, produceren en consumeren is niet veel langer vol te houden. Eigenlijk gebruiken we al vele jaren meer dan de aarde voor iedereen kan opbrengen en kan verwerken. Als we zo doorgaan hebben we in 2030 twee planeten aarde nodig om in ieders behoefte te voorzien en in 2050 zelfs vijf. En als we iedereen hetzelfde levenspeil gunnen als de meeste mensen in het Westen dan hebben we vijftien keer de oppervlakte van de aarde nodig.
Luister niet meer naar de banken
Ma, 2012-05-07 07:55 — edterDe financiële en economische crisis heeft aangetoond hoe diep de tentakels van de banken inmiddels in de Europese Unie doorgedrongen zijn. De bescheiden golf van financiële regulering die met de crisis van 2008 in gang was gezet is beëindigd. Hoewel het nog te vroeg is om een volledig beeld te kunnen schetsen, is er nu al een overvloed aan bewijs dat de banken grotendeels met rust worden gelaten. De bankenlobby kan tevredenvaststellen dat Europese beleidsmakers zich het vuur uit de sloffen hebben gelopen om de bankenbelangen te dienen.

Mij is gevraagd om een en ander te vertellen over gemeengoed, maar ik wil toch beginnen met commentaar te geven op de huidige politieke ontwikkelingen. Ik heb namelijk sterk getwijfeld of ik hier vandaag wel bij wilde zijn.
De initiërende rol van GroenLinks in de Kunduz coalitie heeft mij geschokt. De voorstanders van het gisteren bereikte akkoord zeggen dat er veel is binnengehaald en dat enkele van de meest pijnlijke ingrepen van het Kabinet Rutte van tafel zijn gegaan. De tegenstanders, waar ik mijzelf onder schaar, wijzen erop dat het nog steeds een overwegend rechts akkoord is, en dat GroenLinks iedere hoop op een progressief-linkse coalitie op deze wijze de grond inboort.

A remarkable, and terrible, thing has just taken place in the Netherlands of which few Americans are aware. The ruling Dutch political coalition collapsed when the ultra-right wing party (the Freedom Party, led by Geert Wilders) refused to support its coalition partners’ austerity package (calling for tax increases and reduced government expenditures). Wilders is best known for his opposition to Islamic immigrants but is developing a new following based on his Euro skepticism. Den Haag heeft een vertaling gemaakt van het interview ‘Interventie, Revolutie en Vrijheid van Meningsuiting’ met Antonio Negri. Het interview werd origineel gepubliceerd in de catalogus van het Deense paviljoen op de Biënnale van Venetië in 2011 genaamd ‘Speech Matters’. De tentoonstelling, gecureerd door Katerina Gregos (die tevens het interview afnam), had als thema de vrijheid van meningsuiting en de verschillende aspecten daarvan: van censuur en de intimidatie van de pers tot internetrestricties maar ook de toenemende surveillance en andere vormen van controle. The Jordanian monarch's pilgrimage was preceded by those of the presidents of Germany, Georgia and Moldova, the prime minister of Montenegro, the foreign minister of Croatia and the defense minister of Slovenia in the past month.

To quote from Stephen Sheehi’s book, Islamophobia: The Ideological Campaign Against Muslims:
The issue of gender has been a key prong in the strategic trident to unify bi-partisan and mass support for US interventionism in the Muslim world. Both Arabic and English media have been flooded by a slew of contrived, opportunistic, and charlatan Muslim and Arab women, such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Irshad Manji, Nonie Darwish, Wafa Sultan, and Brigitte Gabriel, advancing Western-centric attacks on Islam.
As Sheehi points out, these attacks have mostly focused on issues such as the veil, as well as honor crimes, with the advocates so listed vaulted to the top of expert panels and best-seller lists by virtue of their parroting the dominant discourse, as befits the role of the comprador class. To this shameful compendium we can add another woman, as well as another line of attack: Asra Nomani, and adoption in the Muslim world.

MEXICO CITY, Apr 17, 2012 (IPS) - Biodiversity and small and medium farms are threatened in Mexico by the looming approval of a reform of the law on plant varieties that will extend patent rights over seeds, activists and experts warn.
The amendment, of the federal law on plant varieties in effect since 1996, was approved by the Senate in November and is now making its way through the lower house of Congress.
"They are trying to expand privatisation in this important sector, as part of an offensive backed by transnational corporations to give more rights to breeders (of plant varieties), which are mainly these big companies," Adela San Vicente, the head of Semillas de Vida (Seeds of Life), a local NGO, told IPS.
